Save my Scenario - A Community for Writers
This is a wonderful idea for a community! I've had a scenario buzzing around in my head for a while now, but it's a fanfic idea for a very small fandom; hopefully the idea can transcend fandom boundaries. The fandom in question is Ecco the Dolphin, specifically the storyline for the older games in the series. In the Ecco the Dolphin reality, all cetaceans (called Singers ingame) are unquestionably sapient beings and have a self-contained society completely separate from humans.|
So, basically, the scenario involves the complete extinction of humankind. Kind of depressing, yes, but there you go. The human-counted year is somewhere in the late twenty-first century CE. The die-off coincides with a very nasty war, at least part of which includes large explosions that are probably nuclear in nature. The humans also develop some sort of superbug that only affects their species. Some humans develop some sort of very effective flying or antigravity technology and escape to floating islands of their creation, but even these small pockets of safety come too late to save the species.
The Singers only really notice the explosive weapons detonated close to shore - they call them the "Great Eruptions" - and the floating islands. They don't associate the "eruptions" with humans, and only loosely associate the islands with them.
Of course, any large-scale nuclear war, even with the human-specific superbug also going around, will affect many more species than humankind, including oceanic beings like the Singers. The Singers go through a sudden-to-them increase in deaths and birth defects, but as a whole make it through the hard times with the help of their friend the Asterite. The Asterite has shown the ability to bestow a bottlenose dolphin with very fast healing and the ability to stay underwater for a very long time, so it should be able to help them, as well as their undoubtedly affected food supplies.
At some point, the Singers do figure out what was causing the increase in problems thanks to telepathic contact (through the Asterite) with a lone human. This contact eventually establishes the basis for the random comment from a dolphin of the far future that led to all this: "The floating islands were born of the great eruptions."
So... there's the scenario. Given the already fairly bizzare nature of the series (*points at her icon*), does this seem at least plausible?
